FAIR work flow service is summarized in the below Figure and implies:
- Air platform is connected to any devices and, in the future, with connected cars. Nowadays, AIR is using a high technological black box (Dongle/ OBD2) plugged into the cars to collect data; then, this set of data will be sent them back together with diagnostic data from third parties (I.e. Mechanics, food & services providers…) through API; when connected cars and a legislative framework mandating an interoperable, standardized, secure and open-access platform for in-vehicle data will be available then the dongle will not be used anymore.
- The collected data are processed through a software platform using big data analyses algorithms and machine learning techniques;
- The data will be available via web service (B2B and B2C Platforms) and App to drivers, cars dealers, fleets, third parties and governmental bodies.
The Dongle (Black Box – 2nd generation of on board diagnostic devices OBD2) is manufactured by the French company Mobile Devices, which is a supporting partner of the project, the dongle is connected to cars using a telemetry and diagnostic software. The Dongle can send GPS position in less than 10 seconds with a precision of -161dBm, with 64 communication channels thanks to its continuous update SiRF AtlasV architecture, its new antenna and its technology GPS assisted. Moreover, the device sends directly to our server diagnostic and telemetry data, which are analysed through our algorithms.
The Software Platform will be implemented using as starting point the actual platform that AIR is using on 2000 cars, to offer protection services (Crash and satellite alarm) via Smartphone App. The actual platform extrapolates only vertical data from car dongles. The new software platform (see figure on the right) will be based on Machine learning and predictive algorithms, and it will eventually allow to create a Usage Based Insurance (UBI) which will rely upon big data analyses of drivers’ needs and information, offering relevant
opportunities in terms of:
- Improvement of risk measurement and
pricing; - Support to customize products oriented to consumers’ needs;
- Knowledge on real drivers’ behaviour and improvement of new risk engineering models;
- Just-in-time information on claims process;
- Recovery of contextual information and correlation with non-auto risks.
A new FAIR PLATFORM and APP will be developed for selling and managing via web the new on demand insurance products, based on Pay-Per-mile and Pay How-You-Drive logic, and through the APP, which is connected to the cars via Dongle; when connected cars will be available on the market, then the App will be the only car interface connection. AIR has already developed an APP that is connected to cars dongle and provides, at this stage, vertical data, and a platform that shows as basic view or B2B, some driving behavior and diagnostic information.
This system offers the following functionalities:
- Trip Report Using GPS to keep track of travels, their duration and distance travels;
- EcoReport to manage car consumption, to keep an eye on travel costs and respecting the environment;
- Business Report to keep track of work missions for calculating the mileage reimbursement;
- Speed Guard to avoid surprises by monitoring when the car reaches speed limits.
